Application of Biochar in Cementitious Materials

2024-01-09 09:11:59

Biochar is a porous carbon rich solid product produced through high-temperature biomass pyrolysis in anaerobic environments. It has been widely used in fields such as soil improvement, heavy metal treatment in wastewater, and new energy.

Previous studies have shown that biochar can be used as a substitute for cement in the production of cementitious materials to reduce resource consumption. Biochar can not only promote the release of free water and bound water to enhance hydration, but also serve as a fine aggregate, thereby improving the comprehensive performance of cementitious materials and expanding their potential application areas. The addition of biochar can enhance the value of cementitious materials, including durability, sound absorption and noise reduction, thermal insulation, and pollutant solidification. Cement based materials have applications in various real-world scenarios, such as road construction, mine filling, and building construction.

The cement industry is usually accompanied by a large amount of CO2 emissions during production and use, which is the main cause of global warming. In order to achieve low-carbon goals and reduce resource consumption, silica fume, slag, and fly ash are commonly used as substitutes for cement. Although these raw materials can reduce the use of resources and energy, there are issues with high production costs and substandard material performance. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an economical and environmentally friendly material to replace these raw materials. In recent years, there has been an increasing amount of research on the application of biochar in building materials, but the mechanism of action of biochar in building materials is still relatively primitive. Conducting internal mechanism research is crucial for promoting green and sustainable development and scientific research.

Utilizing the excellent physical and chemical properties of biochar to immobilize harmful substances in solid waste to meet environmental requirements. This will enable the role of biochar to be fully utilized and provide a new approach to reducing resource and energy consumption.
